Bertha grinned. "Sounds like Aunt Iona and I might get along mighty fine."

"It's too late in the day to go see her now, but if you want to come back tomorrow morning we can go."

Ted checked his watch. "It's barely three in the afternoon. Are you sure it's too late?"

Sharon chuckled. "Oh, yes. We wouldn't get a cohesive thought out of her. She's likely three cups into her special tea by now."

Bertha perked up. "Special tea, you say? I'll have to bring some of my special tea for dear Aunt Iona tomorrow."

Sharon's expression grew thoughtful, and she absently stroked her chicken's feathers as she considered our words. The chicken had hopped into her lap at some point, seemingly drawn to the warmth and comfort of its mistress.

Lela pointed to the chicken. "He sure does enjoy being treated like a pet, doesn't he?"

Sharon smiled and stared warmly at the chicken. "Oh, yes. Cluck Norris loves being scratched and held."

Joseph laughed. "Umm, did I hear you correctly? Cluck Norris?"

"Yep. Cluck is my familiar." Sharon chuckled, scratching the chicken under his chin. "Never underestimate the power of a familiar, my dears. They may seem silly at times, but they're our staunchest allies. Do you all have familiars?"

I nodded. "We do and we brought them to Scotland, we just didn't want to bombard you with a bunch of new faces and a menagerie of animals on your first visit."

"All of our family ends up with one eventually." She smiled and stood. "You should bring them with you tomorrow. Aunt Iona loves meeting familiars."

Sharon led us out of the house, Cluck Norris nestled comfortably in her arms. As we stepped onto the porch, the chicken wriggled free and hopped to the ground, pecking at the dirt.

"Oh, Cluck Norris," Sharon chuckled, shaking her head. "Always looking for trouble, aren't you?"

I couldn't help but smile. There was something endearing about the plucky little bird, with his glossy black feathers and bright, inquisitive eyes.

"May I?" I asked, reaching out a tentative hand.

Sharon nodded, and I gently scratched the top of Cluck Norris' head. The chicken let out a contented cluck, leaning into my touch.

"He likes you," Sharon said, her eyes twinkling. "Cluck Norris is an excellent judge of character."

Bertha, who had been watching the exchange with a bemused expression, spoke up. "Speaking of character, I can't wait to meet this Aunt Iona of yours. Sounds like my kind of woman."

"Oh, she's a character all right," Sharon agreed, a hint of mischief in her voice. "And I have a feeling she'll love your special tea, Bertha. Might even give her a run for her money."

Bertha cackled, rubbing her hands together in anticipation. "I do love a challenge."
